William Chapman Hewitson (1908)

William Chapman Hewitson (born January 9, 1806 in Newcastle upon Tyne , † May 28, 1878 ) was a British entomologist and ornithologist .

Life

Hewitson grew up in York and was originally a land surveyor, who at times also worked for George Stephenson's railway line from London to Birmingham . After a rich inheritance (and for health reasons), he gave up his profession and devoted himself to the natural sciences. He lived in Bristol and Hampstead (London) and from 1848 on his newly built country estate in Oatlands Park in Surrey .

Hewitson was a wealthy collector of insects (butterflies, beetles), but also of birds and bird eggs. His butterfly collection (especially butterflies) was one of the most extensive of his time and he had naturalists all over the world collect for it. He was also a very good illustrator of his collections. He bequeathed his collections to the Natural History Museum . His library went to the Natural History Society of Newcastle, of which he was a member, and he also bequeathed a large sum to the Muller Institute in Bristol. In addition to books about butterflies, he also published books about bird eggs.
