Werner Sobek (2008)

Werner Sobek (born May 16, 1953 in Aalen ) is a German civil engineer and architect . He is a full professor at the University of Stuttgart and head of the Institute for Lightweight Design and Construction (ILEK) - thus the scientific and organizational framework of the Stuttgart School of Structural Engineering has undergone a significant further development. Sobek is the owner of the Werner Sobek group of companies. He is one of the initiators of the German Sustainable Building Council .

Life

From 1974 to 1980 Sobek completed a degree in civil engineering and architecture at the University of Stuttgart. Between 1980 and 1986 he was a research assistant at the Collaborative Research Center SFB 64 Wide-Spanned Structures at the University of Stuttgart. In 1987 he received his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Stuttgart. Between 1987 and 1991 he worked in the engineering office Schlaich Bergermann und Partner in Stuttgart .

In 1992 he founded the Werner Sobek office , which in addition to its main location in Stuttgart is now also represented in Berlin , Buenos Aires , Dubai , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg , Istanbul , Moscow and New York . In 1991 he was appointed professor and head of the Institute for Structural Design and Building Research at the University of Hanover (successor to Bernhard Tokarz ).

Since 1994 Sobek has been a professor at the University of Stuttgart, succeeding Frei Otto and director of the Institute for Lightweight Structures and the Central Laboratory for Structural Engineering. In 1998 he became a member of the board of the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Engineers and appointed test engineer for structural engineering for all disciplines.

In 2000 he took over a second chair to succeed Jörg Schlaich and founded the Institute for Lightweight Design and Construction (ILEK). The same year: Shanghai Engineering License. From 2000 to 2001 he was visiting professor at the Technical University of Graz . Since 2002 he has been a member of the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects, an extraordinary member of the BDA and a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and State Planning.

In 2003 Werner Sobek was named a Peer Review Engineer in Chicago. In 2004 the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich honored his work with the exhibition show me the future - ways into the future. engineering and design by werner sobek . In 2009 a major exhibition followed in the Ringturm Gallery in Vienna under the title Sketches for the Future - Werner Sobek and the ILEK . This exhibition was also shown at the 2010 Moscow Architecture Biennale, where it received an award for best guest exhibition.

Werner Sobek was a member of the Research and Technology Advisory Board of Graz University of Technology and Chairman of the University Council of the newly founded HafenCity University Hamburg in Hamburg from 2006 to 2010 . In 2007-2008 Werner Sobek held a visiting professorship at the GSD (Graduate School of Design) at Harvard. In April 2008 Werner Sobek became President of the German Sustainable Building Council. V. ([DGNB]), of which he is a founding member. He held this office until June 21, 2010. In June 2013 Werner Sobek decided not to run for the Presidium of the DGNB anymore. From summer 2008 to spring 2014, Werner Sobek was also Mies van der Rohe Studio Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

On June 10th, 2009 the TU Dresden awarded him the academic degree “Doctor of Engineering Honors” for his services to the development of modern architecture, especially with regard to the creative collaboration between architects and engineers and his commitment to rethinking building for the future halber “(Dr.-Ing. E. h.). On November 8, 2013, Graz University of Technology awarded him an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) “in recognition of his outstanding scientific and technical achievements in the fields of architecture and civil engineering” . In 2012 Werner Sobek worked as a professor and owner of a group of companies with over 200 employees and as a test engineer for structural engineering.

The Institute for Lightweight Construction, Design and Construction (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart , headed by Werner Sobek, combines the areas of design and design that are dominant in architecture with the areas of analysis and construction as well as materials science, which are the focus of civil engineering. On the basis of a goal-oriented and interdisciplinary approach, the institute deals with the conceptual and cross-material development of all types of construction methods and supporting structures. The range of work areas ranges from building with textiles and glass to new structures in reinforced and prestressed concrete. From the individual detail to the entire structure, it is a matter of optimizing shape and construction with regard to material and energy consumption, durability and reliability, recyclability and environmental compatibility.

Werner Sobek is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Building Culture Foundation .

In December 2011 Werner Sobek founded the Stuttgart Institute of Sustainability Stiftung e. V., a non-profit association whose aim is to promote research on sustainable building techniques.

Werner Sobek has been the speaker of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1244 "Adaptive Shell and Structures for the Built Environment of Tomorrow" since January 2017 .

Projects

Residential houses

Post Tower in Bonn

Werner Sobek plans one house every year. These projects serve the office as an experiment and demonstration object for new technologies, which are then often used in the larger projects of the office. One of these buildings is R128, the Sobek family's private residence in Stuttgart. The cube-shaped, four-story building , completely glazed on all sides, is almost completely recyclable and emission-free. R128 has a modular structure. The electricity required for heating and control technology is generated photovoltaically. Other reference buildings in the single-family home sector are H16, D10, F87 ( Efficiency House Plus with electric mobility ) and B10. His study R129 deals with a transparent shell that offers people protection, but allows them close contact with the surrounding nature.
