Fritz Schumacher Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fritz Schumacher Prize is awarded by the Hamburg Senate in memory of the former chief building director Fritz Schumacher to architects and engineers, "whose achievements in the field of urban development, regional planning or construction deserve distinction". A prize of the same name with a similar objective was also awarded by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation from 1950 to 2004 .

history

The Hamburg industrialist and patron Alfred Toepfer and his Alfred Toepfer Foundation FVS praised a Fritz Schumacher Architecture Prize in conjunction with the University of Hamburg from 1949 to 1955, which was awarded annually to outstanding personalities and students of technical universities in Germany. After disagreements, the prize was then awarded by the TH Hannover (1960–2004). In 2005 this award was given up due to a restructuring of the foundation.

From 1960 to 1986, the Hamburg Senate awarded its own Fritz Schumacher Prize, financed by the city. In 2007, the Senate, in agreement with the Foundation and the Fritz Schumacher Society, decided to revive this award after 20 years. It has since been endowed with 20,000 euros and is to be awarded every three years. There are also two scholarships of 2,500 euros each. The prizes are awarded on November 5th, the anniversary of Fritz Schumacher's death .
