Matti Caspi , also Mati Kaspi ( Hebrew מתי כספי; born November 30, 1949 in Chanita , Israel ) is an Israeli songwriter , singer , composer and arranger . He is considered one of the most popular musicians in Israel.

biography

Matti Caspi was born in Kibbutz Chanita in northern Israel in 1949. He learned to play the piano at the Conservatory in Nahariya , although he hated the piano lessons. At the age of 16 he made his first public appearance at a youth competition organized by the state broadcaster .

After his military service he founded a group with Gidi Oron and Jaakow Noy, which initially called itself "The Three Fat Men", then Lo ichpat lahem ("They don't care"). During the Yom Kippur War , he toured several Israeli military bases with Leonard Cohen , who arranged his song Lover Lover Lover for appearances with Caspi. Since the 1970s he has worked with numerous Israeli artists, including Ehud Manor , Shlomo Gronich , Jehudit Ravitz , Shalom Hanoch and Riki Gal . The song Emor Shalom , written by Matti Caspi and Ehud Manor for the women's trio Chocolate Menta Mastik , came in sixth at the 1976 Eurovision Song Festival in The Hague .

Matti Caspi's musical style is diverse and processes various influences from classical music , Balkan and Eastern European music, Roma music , jazz, rock and Brazilian music. Caspi has translated some of the songs by the founder of Bossa Nova, Antônio Carlos Jobim , from Brazilian into Hebrew. He also works closely with Sasha Argov . In 2000 he released an album under the title “Duette”, on which, among others, Aviv Geffen , Rami Kleinstein , Etti Ankri , Jehudit Ravitz, Dani Litani and other artists participated.

Private

Caspi's first marriage to Galia Superstein was divorced after just under a year. He has two children with his second wife, actress Doreen Lubetzky. He met Doreen in 1972, married her three years later and separated from her in 1990. The divorce proceedings dragged on for years, with allegations of bigamy and disagreements between the rabbinical courts in Beverly Hills and Israel. Caspi also has two children with his third wife, Raquel Wenger, with whom he lived in Canada and California for a number of years.
