Handball

TSV 1861 Zirndorf is known nationwide for its handball department, which surprisingly qualified as Bavarian runner- up in 1966 for the south season of the newly created handball Bundesliga . In the decisive placement game in the preliminary round of the South German Championship, the Zirndorfer beat the multiple German champions Frisch Auf Göppingen 3-2 and qualified for the final round of the South German Championship and thus also for the Bundesliga instead of the Göppingen. There the TSV was bottom of the table at the end of the 1966/67 season , which resulted in immediate relegation. A renewed advance into the Bundesliga was no longer successful for the Zirndorfer. In 1968 TSV failed as Bavarian champion in the southern German promotion round to the Bundesliga as second just at the Württemberg representative TS Esslingen. The Zirndorfer could not qualify immediately for the 1969 second highest division under the Bundesliga. It was not until 1971 that the promotion succeeded, but in 1973 the TSV rose from bottom of the table and has never played above the level of the state association since then.
