Tacinga werneri is a species of the genus Tacinga in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet werneri honors the Swiss gardener and expert for Brazilian cacti Werner Uebelmann .
description
Tacinga werneri has a shrubby growth with many upright twigs extending from the base and reaches heights of 50 to 90 centimeters. The dark green shoots are divided into segments. The elongated to broadly elliptical segments have slightly raised cusps. They are 10 to 20 inches long, 4 to 8 inches wide and 0.5 to 2 inches thick. The areoles on it are covered with dirty white glochids . 3 to 5 spread out, ash-gray spines with a yellowish or brownish tip arise from the areoles . The thorns are 1.5 to 6.3 inches long.
The bright red flowers are 3.5 to 5 inches long and do not open very wide. Your pericarpel is top-shaped and only slightly longer than it is wide. The elongated, egg-shaped, often beaked fruits are greenish white to white. They are 3 to 5.5 centimeters long, have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters and contain a pink pulp with many seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Tacinga werneri is widespread in northeastern Brazil on rocks and island mountains in the caatinga vegetation at altitudes of 100 to 650 meters. It was first described as Opuntia werneri in 1992 by Urs Eggli . Nigel Paul Taylor and Wolfgang Hermann Stuppy placed them in the genus Tacinga in 2002 .
Tacinga werneri is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. endangered, classified.
