Tadeusz Gorecki (also Tadeusz von Gorecki ; born June 5, 1825 in Dusinėnai , now Vilnius Rajongemeinde , † January 31, 1868 in Paris ) was a Polish portrait painter.

Life

Tadeusz Gorecki was the son of Antonio (1787–1861) and Weronika, b. Ejdziwitowicz. His father came from a respected, aristocratic family, was an officer and poet and had participated in the Napoleonic wars . He also fought in the November uprising in 1830, which is why he had to flee abroad after its suppression and live in emigration . The wife and children stayed near Vilnius. The family assets have been sequestered by the Russian authorities . The older brother Ludwik later fell as a captain in the Crimean War .

As a teenager, the young Gorecki spent a lot of time in the art and teaching studio of the then popular painter and sculptor Wincenty Dmochowski (1807–1862) in Vilnius. He may also have had painting lessons from his cousin Walenty Wańkowicz . He later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg under Karl Pawlowitsch Brjullow , with whom he later worked. In 1842 he presented two works at the Academy's annual exhibition, including the work "Wnętrze świątyni ewangelickiej w Petersburgu" ( The Interior of the Evangelical Church in St. Petersburg ), which attracted attention. In the following year he received a silver medal, 2nd class.

In 1850 his painting "Chrystus błogosławiący dzieci" ( Christ blesses the children ) was honored with a gold medal. In the same year he received a two-year scholarship. Also in 1850, Gorecki applied to the academy for the title of portrait painter. As a test, he created a portrait of academician Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg .

In September 1850 the artist traveled to Warsaw, Berlin, Paris and finally Madrid. He was enthusiastic about the painting collection there in the Museo del Prado . For several months he worked on copies of pictures by Sebastiano del Piombo and Jusepe de Ribera , whose style of painting impressed him.

In 1855 he visited Italy, where he stayed for three years. Here too he copied the old masters, such as Raffael . On November 7, 1857 Gorecki married the daughter of Adam Mickiewicz , Maria (* 1835). During the wedding taking place in Paris there was an argument between him and a brother of Mary, Władysław Mickiewicz. Although the bride was able to prevent a duel from being held, his relationship with the woman's family remained disrupted. After the wedding, Gorecki settled permanently in Paris. The couple had four children, some of whom died young. Only the son Ludwik (also: Louis) had offspring himself. In 1866 Gorecki visited his home again. Two years later he died at the age of 43 after a serious illness. He was buried next to his father in the family crypt on the Cimetière Montparnasse . His wife survived him by 54 years.

In addition to the copies of the old masters, Gorecki painted religious pictures and genre scenes . His portraits of representatives of the Russian intelligentsia, the military, Polish church dignitaries, family members and friends are significant. Witold Pruszkowski was one of his students in Paris.
