description
The Siberian Taimyr Peninsula is the northernmost mainland on earth. It separates the Kara Sea on its west side from the Laptev Sea in the east. It is crossed from southwest to northeast by the Byrranga Mountains , some of which are glaciated in its higher elevations . To the south of this low mountain range lies the North Siberian lowlands .
The core zone of the Sapowednik consists of four separate areas with a total area of 17,815 km². In addition, there is the 9,378 km² “Bikada” protected area, which was created in 1975 to resettle musk oxen , which have since multiplied. The main area with an area of 13,240.42 km² lies in the tundra on the border between the Byrranga Mountains and the North Siberian lowlands. It extends from the western edge of the Taimyrsee about 200 km to the southwest over the relatively flat land characterized by moraines south of the Upper Taimyra to the confluence of the Logata . The part to the north of the Upper Taimyra lies in the Byrranga Mountains and contains the 112 m deep Loewinson-Lessing Lake . The 156 km² area of Ary-Mas on a higher river terrace of the Nowa contains the world's northernmost forest of Dahurian larches . The Lukunski area (90.55 km²) lies in a floodplain of the Khatanga . It was not until 1994 that the reserve was expanded to include the 4,332 km² Arktitscheski area on the Maria-Prontschishschewa Bay of the Laptev Sea . The area includes the Protschishchev Lake and 370 km² of sea surface. It has the character of a polar desert .
