The Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited ( Japanese 武田薬品工業株式会社 , Takeda Yakuhin Kabushiki Kōgyō-gaisha ) is a research-based, global Japanese pharmaceutical company focusing on prescription medicines. With sales equivalent to around 30 billion US dollars in 2019, Takeda is the largest pharmaceutical company in Japan and one of the leading drug manufacturers worldwide.

The 32-year-old Chobei Takeda I founded in 1781 in Doshō-machi (today: Doshō-machi, Chūō-ku , Osaka ) a shop for the sale of traditional Japanese and Chinese medicines. In 1895 its own factory was built and the manufacture of pharmaceutical products began. Takeda started the first direct imports from Great Britain , the USA , Germany and Spain . Takeda entered the German market in 1981 in Aachen under the name Takeda Pharma GmbH as part of a joint venture between the Japanese Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited and the German Grünenthal GmbH . This was the first cooperation with a Japanese company in the German pharmaceutical industry. Today, Germany is one of the Takeda Group's largest locations worldwide. In 1985, Takeda Pharma founded TAP Pharmaceuticals Inc. (now TAP Pharmaceutical Products Inc.) in the United States as a 50:50 joint venture with Abbott Laboratories . TAP started selling a drug for prostate cancer . In 2002, Takeda Pharma GmbH became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited. In 2011, the Takeda Pharmaceutical Company took over the Swiss pharmaceutical company Nycomed .

Acquisition of Shire

In July 2018, it was announced that Takeda intended to buy British pharmaceutical company Shire PLC for $ 62 billion. In early January 2019, Shire announced that Takeda had completed the acquisition of Shire. This acquisition makes Takeda one of the 10 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Shire had 2,016 Baxalta - a spin-off from Baxter International - bought and thus was the world leader in the field of rare diseases ( orphan diseases become).

Takeda employs around 50,000 people in 80 countries, with particular strengths in Asia , North America , Europe and the high-growth markets of Latin America , Russia and China . Takeda operates four locations in Germany, its headquarters are in Berlin . In 1981 the German branch was founded under the name Takeda Pharma GmbH in Aachen. Since 2012, Takeda has been managing market activities in Germany from Berlin via Takeda Pharma Vertrieb GmbH & Co. KG. The place of business is Konstanz (Takeda GmbH). In addition to the Takeda branch in Berlin, administrative and service functions for the DACH region are bundled at the Konstanz location . Oranienburg and Singen , as production sites, are part of Takeda's global production network; around 98% of the total production is exported to foreign markets. The Oranienburg site is a competence center for solid dosage forms (tablets, capsules) in the global Takeda production network. The Singen site specializes in freeze-dried powders (lyophilisates) and semi-solid dosage forms (ointments). A new vaccine factory was also inaugurated here in November 2019. Around 2,500 employees work at the four Takeda locations in Germany. The Austrian subsidiary Takeda Pharma Ges.mbH is based in Vienna , Takeda Austria GmbH at the Linz Chemical Park . The Swiss subsidiary Takeda Pharma AG is based in Pfäffikon SZ. The corporate headquarters in Zurich (Glattpark-Opfikon) is the headquarters for sales activities in Europe & Canada. The US subsidiary Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. , has its headquarters in Deerfield in the US state of Illinois . Worldwide research and development is based in Lincolnshire , USA.
