The term sense of touch describes the ability of living beings to perceive touch, also known as tactile stimuli . The basis of the sense of touch is the mechanical component of surface sensitivity . Perception via the sense of touch (Latin tactus ) is called tactile , active feeling is also called haptic . The smallest distance from which stimuli can be perceived separately is the simultaneous space threshold .
Ernst Heinrich Weber carried out the first modern scientific investigations into the sense of touch in the middle of the 19th century . From 1894 Maximilian von Frey carried out more intensive physiological research . Today, Martin Grunwald ( Leipzig ) is considered a haptics expert.
