Late in the evening, on a deserted street, the famous actor Armaan Kapoor loses control of his car for no apparent reason. Witnesses report that he apparently tried to evade a little and drove into the river. Inspector Surjan Shekhawat is investigating the case with his assistant Devrath Kulkarni. Surjan's personal life has been in turmoil since the death of his 8-year-old son Karan, who recently drowned in the lake during a family outing. His wife Roshni is still mourning and Surjan has developed a guilt complex. Surjan learns that on the night of the accident Armaan was on the road with 2 million rupees in cash, but that it was not found in the car. Armaan gave the money to a blackmailer named Shashi who works as a pimp. Three years earlier, Shashi mated Armaan and his friend Sanjay Kejriwal. When he learns of Armaan's death, Shashi flees with the cash, leaving his wife Mallika behind. Shashi's friend Tehmur steals Shashi's SIM card. Shashi starts blackmailing Sanjay. Sanjay hires criminals to murder Shashi. Tehmur begins using Shashi's old SIM card to blackmail Sanjay with Shashi's murder. Meanwhile, Roshni seeks consolation in a woman who has superhuman strength. She gets in touch with Karan's soul. One night the prostitute Rosie Surjan offers one night. Through Rosie, Surjan learns of Shashi's connection to the case. The police found Shashi's body along with extortion money and a DVD. The DVD contains embarrassing footage of Armaan and his friends leaving the hotel with a girl. Convinced of Armaan's connection with prostitutes, Surjan continues his search. In the poor neighborhood near the Hotel Lido, Rosie takes Surjan to a quiet place on the river bank and tells him that three years ago she was out with Armaan and his friends, Sanjay and Nikhil. However, it reveals nothing more. Surjan tries to approach Nikhil to get more information. He learns that Nikhil is brain dead after the event three years ago. After a heated argument with Roshni, Surjan trusts Rosie who comfort he is by taking him to the lido. Tehmur is killed by the two criminals that Sanjay hired. One of the criminals is arrested by the police and reveals that Sanjay was to blame for Shashi and Tehmur's death. Surjan interrogates Sanjay, who admits that three years ago Sanjay, Armaan and Nikhil took a prostitute with them to celebrate Nikhil's birthday. As he drove, Nikhil started making out with the girl in the back seat. The car door suddenly opened. Nikhil and the girl fell out of the moving car. Both were seriously injured. Armaan and Sanjay took Nikhil to the hospital, but left the injured girl on the street for fear that someone might find out that they had hired a prostitute. Sanjay asked Shashi to take care of her. Shashi informed the three of the girl's death and has been extorting money from them ever since because of incriminating evidence.

On the video, Surjan recognizes Rosie. As he is driving Sanjay to the police station, they are approaching the same street where Armaan had his car accident. Both Surjan and Sanjay see Rosie standing in front of them. As in Armaan's accident, the car drives into the river. Sanjay is dead and Surjan manages to get out of the car with a lot of effort. Rosie appears underwater and saves him. At the police station, the supervisor advises against reporting his incredible story. Surjan is ready to write in the official report that the death of Armaan Kapoor was an accident. He returns to the waterfront where he used to hang out with Rosie. He wonders where Shashi could have buried her body. He remembers what Rosie told him and finds her body. He buries her properly. Surjan now believes in the supernatural and finds a letter from Karan who contacts him through a medium. Through the letter, Karan tells his father that he is not responsible for his death and that he wants his parents to be happy. Surjan cries and Roshni comforts him.

“[...] The troupe is led by Aamir Khan, who was the producer alongside Zoya's brother Farhan Akhtar, and who usually plays the main role with a grim expression. Khan may channel the broken cop a bit one-sided, but he does it with his own charisma. Very brief moments of happiness are granted to him in flashbacks, for example, when family life was still intact. And he can smile maybe twice in the whole two and a half hours. That could lead to losing interest in a weaker actor, but Khan gives the character more life over a long distance than would actually be there on paper.

But that's also because he can clash with some strong co-stars. The lately underemployed Rani Mukherjee, for example, plays his mirror image, just as troubled, probably still mentally broken, and she lets Khan oscillate well between continued affection and spreading despair. Kareena Kapoor, meanwhile, is the only protagonist who noticeably brings life to the dark show when her Rosie flirts with her charms and is fully aware of her appearance. She too lets Khan waver between temptation and blocking.

Hardly anyone stands out among the rest of the actors, at most the talented Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a hobbling and mysterious crook. Siddiqui usually belongs to the environment of director Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur) and since he was involved in the dialogues, he probably explains the appearance. It is always a welcome one. Kagti, who has so far had more experience with lighter fabrics, also uses Kashyaps at the cinema - its gloomy city scenarios, broken people and focused dialogues.
