Sona Mohapatra ( Oriya : ସୋନା ମହାପାତ୍ର , Sonā Mahāpātra ; born June 17, 1978 in Cuttack , Odisha ) is an Indian singer, composer, lyricist and music producer. She sings playback for Bollywood films and commercials, but also gives concerts and appears regularly on the popular television show Satyamev Jayate Aamir Khans .

Youth and education

Sona Mohapatra grew up in a Brahmin family. Her father's profession as a naval officer involved numerous moves. She completed an engineering degree in electrical engineering and measurement technology from the College of Engineering and Technology in Bhubaneswar and earned an MBA in marketing and systems theory from the Symbiosis Center for Management and Human Resource Development in Pune . She then worked as a brand manager at the food and cosmetics producer Marico in Mumbai .

music

Mohapatra's musical beginnings lay in jingles and songs for commercials. A campaign for Unilever included the song Paas Aao Na , which was recorded in several languages ​​and aired in 13 countries for a total of four years. In 2007 Mohapatra released her debut album Sona on Sony Records ; a fusion of rock music , rhythm and blues , flamenco , classical Indian music from Hindustan , Baul and Roma music . In 2009 the single Diljale came out, in the same year Paas Aao Na .

Sona Mohapatra sang playback for various Bollywood films, mostly compositions by Ram Sampath, and had cameo appearances in the films.

She became known to an even wider audience through her participation in the television show Satmayev Jayate by actor Aamir Khan. The program takes up socially critical problems of everyday Indian life such as gender-specific fetocide , the dowry or the caste system and contains musical elements oriented towards these topics. The singer of the compositions by Ram Sampath was repeatedly Sona Mohapatra; the pieces published for the first time in the show achieved high hits on YouTube and other platforms. Mohapatra was also responsible as producer for the musical part of the show.

In addition to concerts in various Indian stadiums and halls, Mohapatra has performed in the USA, including at Lincoln Center in New York, and in Southeast Asia. She is accompanied by a group of six musicians around the guitarist Sanjoy Das.

A BBC studio concert in Salford in which Sona Mohapatra, accompanied by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Dave Heath, performed Hindi classic films by RD Burman , was broadcast live in twelve countries on September 15, 2014.

Personal

Sona Mohapatra has been married to Ram Sampath since 2005. The couple lives in Mumbai and produces under the label OmGrown Music in their own studio. Mohapatra's sister Pratichee (* 1978) was a member of the short-lived, meanwhile dissolved girl group Viva! .
