Tallman Mountain State Park is a state park in the Orangetown township in Rockland County , New York State . It extends over an area of 687 acres (2.78 km² ) and is directly adjacent to the Hudson River . It is part of the Palisades Interstate Park System .
geography
The park is just one mile north of the New Jersey border, just south of Piermont . It borders directly on the Piermont Marsh which belongs to the Piermont Marsh Component Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve . To the west is the Rockland Country Club (golf club) and the John Orourke Memorial Park . Overall, the park is part of the Palisades Interstate Park System . The nearest protected areas are the Palisades Park in the south across the border from New Jersey with the adjacent Park Alpine and the parks located in the north on the state territory of New York: Clausland Mountain County Park ( Clausland Mountain County Park ) with the Nike Overlook Park ( Nike Overlook Park ) and Tackamac North Park ( Tackamac North Park ) and Blauvelt State Park . In between is the Rockland Cemetery , as well as the Lamont-Doherty-Earth Observatory ( Lamont-Doherty-Earth Observatory ) and other institutes of Columbia University . The Hudson River Palisades rise at this point to 61 m above the Hudson River .
history
The Tallman Mountain State Park was founded in 1928 because the Palisades Interstate Park Commission wanted to record a 0.66 km² site of a quarry in the protected area. The Hudson River Palisades should be placed under protection at this point. Various facilities were added to the park in 1933 when Temporary Emergency Relief Administration workers built a swimming pool, playgrounds, and picnic areas. In 1942 the park was expanded by 542 acres to its present size of 2.19 km².
Freetime activities
Tallman Mountain State Park is a recreational area and has 5 mi (7 km) of hiking trails, including a section of the Long Path and the Tallman Mountain Bike Path . There is also a racetrack, tennis courts, playing fields, cross-country skiing and picnic areas. A private leisure pool on the park area can be used for a fee (since 2016).
