The dam Caldeirão ( Portuguese Barragem do Caldeirão ) is located in the region of central Portugal in the Guarda district , about 2 km west of the city of Guarda . It dams the Caldeirão , a left (eastern) tributary of the Mondego to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem do Caldeirão ). The reservoir is located on the eastern edge of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park (Portuguese Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela ). Approx. 500 m below the dam, the Caldeirão flows into the Mondego.
The project to build the dam began in 1988. The construction was completed in 1993 (or 1996). In addition to supplying drinking water, the dam is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Companhia Portuguesa de Produção de Electricidade (CPPE).
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete arch dam with a height of 39 m above the foundation base . The top of the wall is at a height of 707.1 m above sea level . Its length is 122 m. The volume of the structure is 26,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 242 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 350 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 702 m (max. 703.7 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.66 km² and holds 5.52 million m³ of water - 3.47 (or 3.5 ) Million m³ are used. With the usable 3.5 million m³ of water, 1.5 million kWh can be generated.
power plant
With an installed capacity of 32 (or 40) MW, the Caldeirão power plant is one of the smaller hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual generation is 45 (or 47, 48.7 or 50) million kWh .
The power plant was put into operation in 1994. The Francis turbine has a maximum output of 41.4 MW and the associated generator 40 MVA . The rated speed of the turbine is 333.3 / min. The generator has a nominal voltage of 6.3 kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 6.3 kV to 63 kV by means of a power transformer.
The minimum height of fall is 185.4 m, the maximum 193 m. The maximum flow rate is 26 m³ / s.
The power plant is owned by the CPPE but operated by EDP .
