The Ettenhausen dam is a reservoir in Marksuhl and Ettenhausen an der Suhl in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .
Location and dates
The Ettenhausen dam is located about 15 kilometers south of Eisenach between the towns of Ettenhausen an der Suhl and Lindigshof (municipality of Marksuhl). At an up to 13.10 m high earth dam, the second order Suhl water is dammed up to a lake with a storage volume of 314,000 m³ up to a maximum level of 5.22 m. Due to the height of the reservoir, the reservoir is classified as a category 2 dam according to the regulations in force in Thuringia and is the largest reservoir in the Wartburg district.
history
The dam was built from 1988 to 1990 on behalf of the Eisenach District Council with financial resources from the Erfurt District and was primarily intended to serve as an irrigation reservoir. As a result of the turnaround in 1990, however, the facility could not be handed over to any legal entity, owner or person responsible for maintenance. The flood relief structures initially remained unfinished. The first damming in the trial operation took place in December 1990. As a result of the structural change in agriculture after 1990 , there was no longer any need for the reservoir as an irrigation reservoir. Thus, the reservoir remained unused after the start of the trial damming. After the spring flood of 1994, when the unfinished flood relief was flooded for the first time, the responsible dam supervisor ordered the completion of the system to ensure safe operation. The municipality of Marksuhl sees the dam as having a regional flood protection function and tried from 2003 by filing a lawsuit before the administrative court to ensure that the dam is taken over by the Free State of Thuringia as an ownerless facility in accordance with the Thuringian Water Act , but this only happened at the beginning of 2015. In August 2004 the reservoir was illegally drained by an unknown person and then dammed again by order of the Thuringian State Administration Office . Currently (2012) the reservoir is used by a local fishing club.
