The Nauleis dam is a dam in the Free State of Saxony . It extends for about two kilometers northwest of Radeburg near the towns of Nauleis and Hohndorf .

Description and history

The structure covers an area of around 51 hectares and has a storage space of 1.27 million cubic meters. The catchment area has an area of 32.57 square kilometers. The dam is fed by the Hopfenbach , an approximately 22 kilometer long tributary of the Großer Röder , which flows into the Röderneugraben after passing the dam near Großenhain . Above the dam there is a pre- dam near the Beiersdorf district of Ebersbach .

The barrier structure of the Nauleis Dam is a gravel dam with an inclined inner seal made of clay . To the right and left in the extension of the main dam, the dam has edge dams made of clay. The crown length of the barrier structure is a total of 860 meters. The height of the crown is 8.5 meters above the valley floor. Their width is three meters.

The dam was originally built between 1988 and 1991 for the supply of industrial water to agriculture (irrigation). Large-scale irrigation of the local fields was planned here. After a first trial jam took place in January 1991, the target of 143  m above sea level was set in April 1992 NN reached.

As a result of the economic infrastructure in the region that changed after the fall of the Wall , which also affected local agriculture, the originally planned use of the building changed. The Nauleis dam is currently used primarily for flood protection, fishing and discharge regulation by raising the low water level.

At the beginning of the 2010s, the Nauleis dam and the Beiersdorfer pre-dam were extensively renovated. The state dam administration invested around 1.1 million euros. In the course of the work, in addition to the pre-lock and the flood relief system, the extraction tower and the service walkway were completely renewed in 2013. The bottom drains of the dam were also renovated.

Nature and recreation

The water was conquered relatively quickly by nature. In a contribution in Volume 70 of the publication series " Values of the German Homeland ", published in 2008, it is reported that shortly after it was put into operation, the dam was used as a resting and wintering area for migratory birds and is also used by the local bird world as a breeding area and food space .

Use as a local recreation area is, in turn, only possible to a limited extent due to the lack of necessary infrastructure. Since the dam is operated as a fishing lake, swimming in the dam is not permitted.
