Talviyö (Finnish for winter night ) is the tenth studio album by the power metal band Sonata Arctica , which was released on September 6, 2019 via Nuclear Blast . All lyrics on the album were written by front man Tony Kakko .

background

The title of the album is a Finnish word for "winter night". According to Kakko, he looked for a simple name and searched through Google Translator for translations of "night" in other languages. Eventually he returned to his mother tongue and suggested the title "Talvi". The other band members found this too boring. After a long discussion it was decided to name the album Talviyö.

On June 21, 2019, the band released their first single, A Little Less Understanding . Cold was released as a single on August 23rd. The accompanying music video was shot in Tampere by Patric Ullaeus . He also shoots the music video for Who Failed the Most , which was released on September 6th.

Kakko was initially unsure whether the longest song "The Raven Still Flies with You" would make it on the album because he thought it was "too complex and crazy". The band members decided to release the track. The album cover was designed by Janne Pitkänen.

criticism

“Throughout the album, the instrumentation with the use of piano and other acoustic equipment and (synth) choirs ensures a big, broad sound. Sound and production are absolutely high quality. A fine album "

- Peter Funke : Rock It! Magazine No. 113

"Talviyö is the most experimental album since" The Days Of Grays "and has some progressive elements on its forehead. It takes time, but then unfolds a wonderful magic that won't let you go. Because of one or the other song that is too "slow" the record comes to a standstill, but otherwise it has at least awakened the urge to discover in me. If you just want to ruin it, you haven't let yourself into it for a second, that's for sure (or subjectively sees it differently - se lektor). For me, SONATA ARCTICA are still at the forefront of Melodic Metal and Talviyö is no exception. "
