Kataoka Tamako

Kataoka Tamako ( Japanese 片 岡 球 子 ; born January 5, 1905 in Sapporo ; died January 16, 2008 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nihonga direction of the Shōwa and Heisei periods .

life and work

Born in Sapporo, Kataoka Tamako went to Tokyo, where she joined the Nihonga Department of the private women's art school ( 女子 美術 専 門 学校 , Joshi bijutsu semmon gakkō ); today “women's art college” ( 女子 美術 大学 , Joshi bijutsu daigaku ). She then became a teacher at Ōoka Municipal Elementary School in Yokohama, a position she held until 1955.

Kataoka won her first award in 1930 at the annual exhibition of Nihon Bijutsuin , then in 1939 she also became a “friend” of Bijutsuin. In 1946 she received the Inten Prize for her picture “Summer” ( 夏 , Natsu ) and received further awards in 1948, 1950 and 1951. In 1947 Kataoka continued her education under Yasuda Yukihiko , and in 1952 she was appointed a member of the Bijutsuin. In 1955 Kataoka was a lecturer at her college and then in 1966 a professor at the Aichi Prefectural Art School in Nagakute ( Aichi Prefecture ).

In 1960, Kataoka received the Minister of Education's Promotion Prize ( 藝術 選 奨 文 部 大臣 賞 , Geijutsu senshō mombu daijin shō ), the Grand Prize ( 文 部 大臣 賞 , Mombu-daijin-shō ) in 1961 and in 1974 the Prize of the Academy of Arts . In 1986 she was named a person with special cultural merits , in 1989 she was awarded the cultural order as the third artist after Uemura Shōen and Ogura Yuki .

Kataoka Tamako created colorful images throughout, including numerous decorative images of Mount Fuji , including lithographs.
