Tamora Pierce (2008)

Tamora Pierce (born December 13, 1954 in Connellsville , Pennsylvania ) is an American writer.

Life

Tamora Pierce was supposed to be Tamara, but a nurse at the hospital wrote down a wrong name after she was born. She has two younger sisters named Kimberly and Melanie. At the age of ten, Pierce moved with her family to the vicinity of San Francisco , in 1969 with mother and sisters back to Fayette County , Pennsylvania. After high school, Pierce studied psychology at the University of Pennsylvania .

Tamora Pierce started writing at the age of eleven. Almost all of the novels she has published are fantasy books for young people. Her work is significantly influenced by The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien . So far she has written 20 novels and published three short stories. The German translations were published by Arena Verlag .

In the late 1970s and early 1980s she wrote a 732-page novel called Song of the Lioness . The work was published in four parts because the publisher rejected the manuscript on the grounds that no child would read such long books. In 1983 the first volume in the series was published in English. Later her novels became more extensive again. In an afterword to Trickster's Queen , she writes that she can now divide the length of four books into two, since Joanne K. Rowling has taught Americans with her Harry Potter novels to read more extensive works.

Pierce now lives with Tim Liebe, four cats and two budgies in Manhattan .

In 2005 she received the Skylark Award . In 2013 she received the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association for her great contributions to youth literature .

Audio books

Many of Tamora Pierce's books have also been produced as English audio book versions, so far there is only one German audio book series.

English

The book series The Song of the Lioness , The Protector of the Small , Daughter of the Lioness and The Provost's Dog were all produced by Listening Library as unabridged audio books. The audio books were read by Trini Alvarado (Alanna and Aly books), Bernadette Dunne (Kel books) and Susan Denaker (Beka books).

The series around Dhana, The Immortals , was also produced in full by Full Cast Audio, but almost similar to a radio play with several speakers. Nevertheless, the narrative texts were retained.

Many of the Emelan books were also made into audio books. So far, only full cast audio has been active here. Like The Immortals , The Circle of Magic , The Will of the Empress and Melting Stones were produced as multi-speaker audio books. Melting Stones (October 23, 2007) even has the special feature that it was originally written for the audio book version and that the speakers therefore fit particularly well into their roles. From The Circle Opens quartet only a band, that has hitherto Street Magic also of Full Cast Audio - - implemented as an audio book. Magic Steps , the first volume in the series, is currently being planned, the release date is not yet known.

German

So far only the book series around Alanna has been produced as a German audio book. The publisher Audiolino brought out all four volumes as four CDs each, and the template was shortened accordingly.

Books in Tortall

These books are set in the fictional land of Tortall and its surroundings.

Alanna

The Black City:
Thom and Alanna von Trebond are twins from a noble family. Thom is supposed to go to the palace to become a knight, as befits his class, and Alanna is supposed to go to the monastery to learn about courtship. But since this future doesn't suit them both, they swap roles. Thom goes to the monastery to become a magician, and Alanna, disguised as Alan, goes to the palace to become a knight. There she makes friends who will go through thick and thin with her, but she also makes enemies. At the end of her time as a page, she and Crown Prince Jonathan have to free the desert people of the Bazhir from the curse of the mysterious "Black City".
Under the spell of the goddess:
Alanna, who, still disguised as a boy, tries to become a knight in the palace of Tortall, is now a squire. But Roger von Conté, Prince Jonathan's cousin, seems to be playing the wrong game. Alanna appears to be the only one who realizes he's trying to usurp the throne from Tortall.
The broken sword:
Alanna, the first female knight of Tortall, wants to distance herself from the court for a while and rides into the desert, where the Bazhir, the desert people of Tortall, live. There she is adopted by the Bloody Hawk tribe. But the shaman of the tribe is against them. And when Jonathan arrives, Alanna's feelings get completely mixed up.
The jewel of power:
Alanna is given a card by Halef Seif, the chief of her Bazhir tribe, the Bloody Hawks. She goes on a journey to have it deciphered. This leads you on the trail of the legendary "jewel of power", which gives a born ruler tremendous power. Alanna sets out on a dangerous journey to find the gem of glory in Tortall. But when she returns home with it, she realizes that some things have changed in her absence and that the reanimated Roger von Conté tries again to usurp power.

Dhana

Battle for Tortall:
Veralidhana Sarrasri, called Dhana, meets Onua in a market in Galla. She is responsible for the horses of Queen Tortall's cavalry. She takes Dhana back to Tortall. There the girl finally finds friends. But Tortall is threatened by the immortals. The immortals were doomed to the Divine Realms 400 years ago, but recently they were liberated and are now making the mortal realms unsafe. Then Dhana also discovers a special ability. She can talk to animals. In the end, she is also responsible for a baby dragon whose mother was killed.
In the valley of the long lake:
Dhana comes to the aid of a pack of wolves with whom she used to live. When Dhana and Numair, who is teaching them their wild magic, arrive in the valley where the wolves live, they discover that something very strange is going on there: a conspiracy against the crown of Tortall is underway. And then Dhana develops a new ability even in the most unfavorable moments: she can transform herself into animals.
The Imperial Magician:
Dhana travels with a delegation of Tortall to Carthak, where negotiations are to take place in order to avert the impending war. But the Emperor Carthaks, Ozorne, has very different plans; especially with Dhana, who is supposed to heal his birds, her baby dragon kitten and Numair, Ozorne's former friend. But Ozorne isn't the only one with plans of his own. The Graveyard Hag , the goddess Carthaks, also has plans for Dhana and Ozorne.
In the realm of the gods:
Dhana and Numair are brought into the realm of the gods to fight the immortals. As it turns out, Dhana is a demigoddess. Her father is Weiryn, the god of the hunt. The only way back to Tortall is Dhana and Numair through the Divine Realms to the Dragons. There are many dangers to be overcome, and then the battle with the immortals awaits them in Tortall.

Protector of the Small - Keladry

First test
Keladry von Mindelan has a dream: she wants to be a knight. Since her idol Alanna von Trebond did this and Jonathan von Conté is king, this should also be possible in principle, but Kel did not expect the instructor, Lord Wyldon, who is responsible for the pages. Kel is allowed to begin her training as a page, but Lord Wyldon demands that she be in the palace for a year only on probation. Only after this year will it be decided whether Kel can stay. Although she finds this extremely unfair, Kel accepts the challenge and begins her training. She doesn't only have friends at the palace. Some of the older pages, like Lord Wylden, are of the opinion that girls are not theirs and make life difficult for them. But Kel also makes friends, including the birds that nest in front of her window.
page
Kel managed to convince Lord Wyldon that she could be a knight. She returns to the palace for her second year as a page full of energy. But shortly after her arrival she is confronted with new problems. She has a dog that she shouldn't have, since the bellboys are forbidden to have pets, and she hires a frightened young woman as a maid. Kel struggles through another three years in the palace, during which she receives both intellectually and physically training. At the end of four years as a page, there are the big tests that the pages must pass if they want to be raised to the rank of squire. But the night before Kel's tests, her maid is kidnapped. Kel sets out to find her, knowing that Lord Wyldon will not tolerate being late for the test. The relevant page must repeat up to four years.
Squire
Finally, Kel is a squire. But their joy about it is clouded. She is the only squire of her year who has not yet found a knight to take on further training. She had almost given up hope when the commander of the royal bodyguard offered her to become his squire. Kel is happy to accept and looks forward to four more exciting years, including learning how to command troops. But her feelings for one of her best friends also changed over the years. And at the end of the four years, Kel is also faced with the examination chamber, in which all the miners take their exams and are then knighted.
Lady Knight
The war on Tortall's northern border against Scanra is in full swing when Kel is knighted. Kel is also sent to war. She is supposed to set up and run a refugee camp. She complies with the orders bitterly. She actually wanted to fight actively. When Kel reports in a neighboring fort, their refugee camp is attacked by enemies and all refugees are abducted. Kel sets out to save her charges; in the land of the enemy.

Daughter of the Lioness - Alianne

Trickster's Choice (German: Lia: The Queen's Prophecy )
Alanna's daughter, Alianne, has not gotten along very well with her parents lately. All she hears from her mother is that she should finally make something of her life and her father, deputy head of Tortall's secret service, does not want her to work as a spy because that is too dangerous. Alianne sails out to sea alone to collect her thoughts. Contrary to their experiences, pirates are already out and about at this time of the year . Alianne is captured and sold as a slave on the Copper Islands. She is already in the process of forging an escape plan when the deceiver god of the Copper Islands, Kyprioth, appears to her. He makes a pact with her: She stays on the islands and makes sure that two young women survive the summer. If she can do this, God will make sure that her father lets Alianne work as a spy. Their task is made even more difficult by the fact that the Balitang family, who are supposed to protect them, have fallen into the disgrace of the regent of the Copper Islands, who is known to be quite uncomfortable contemporaries. During the summer, Alianne, who everyone still considers a slave, has to uncover several conspiracies. One of them falls victim to the landlord of the Balitangs. At the end of the book, the unpopular King of the Copper Islands dies and his only four-year-old son officially becomes king. Until he came of age, however, Rubinjan and his wife Imajane rule the empire with an iron hand.
Trickster's Queen
Back from exile, Aly is now not “just” a spy in a small circle, but the master spy of a group that wants to spark a revolution and ultimately set Sarai, the elder of the two girls, as queen.
The entire empire falls under the "rule" of a child king or his corrupt relatives in turmoil and Aly has to do her job in the midst of the (among other things emotional) confusions. By cleverly spreading rumors, Aly manages to create mutual distrust between Rubinjan and Imajane as well as between the regents and their spies at the royal court. However, the barrel is overflowed by a devious assassination attempt on the child king ordered by the court. The revolution comes to its climax in an open battle in front of and in the royal palace.
