Tanai is a district in the south of the Afghan province of Khost .

geography

The Tanai District borders the Spera District in the west, Nadir Shah Kot and Mando Zayi in the north, the Gurbuz District in the west and the border with Pakistan in the south.

population

The district had about 59,000 inhabitants in 2013/14. In 1999 the district still had around 33,234 inhabitants.

history

The district capital of the district is the city of Tani in the northeast of the district. The people of Tanai speak the Pashtun language . On the border to Pakistan , the governor of Khost province has a field office in the village of Banda Khel , where journalist Anja Niedringhaus was killed in April 2014.
