Kane Tanaka ( Japanese 田中 カ 子 , Tanaka Kane ; born January 2, 1903 in Wakaki, Kasuya-gun , Fukuoka Prefecture ) is a Japanese Supercentenarian . She has been the oldest living person since July 22, 2018.

Life

Tanaka was born in 1903 as one of three sisters and nine siblings in Fukuoka Prefecture. She married Hideo Tanaka in 1922, with whom she had two sons. During World War II , she ran a rice cake business with her husband and son . Both died in the war and Tanaka kept the business running. At the age of 63 she retired from the business. After visiting their children and grandchildren in Hawaii with her cousin , she traveled again to the United States in the 1970s, where many of her nieces and nephews also lived. She remembers this trip to California and Colorado very well.

In 2005, at the age of 102, she moved to the “Gute Zeit” nursing home in Higashi-ku, Fukuoka City . She was never seriously ill; At the age of 103 she was diagnosed with colon cancer, which she defeated after an operation and has been in good health ever since. She is using a hearing aid. When she was 107 years old, her second son wrote a book about her life and longevity.

Even at the age of 115 she used a rollator and liked to take short walks in the hallways of her home. Another hobby is poetry ; she likes to write poetry. In addition, she plays the board game Othello every day with employees at her home , which she is very good at and which is said to have helped her to old age. Furthermore, she likes to study and take math class once a week. She eats almost three meals a day with no likes or dislikes. But she likes sweet things and finished three cans of soda every day, including canned coffee, energy drinks, and carbonated liquids. She gives family, sleep, hope and belief in God as her secrets for longevity. She says she has absolutely no desire to die.

The Gerontology Research Group verified her age early on. On March 24, 2017, she entered the list of the 100 oldest people , and on October 3, 2017, she also entered the top 50 oldest people. She has been among the 30 oldest since June 4, 2018, and among the oldest 25 since July 17, 2018. In August 2020, she moved up to fourth place. Since Mitsue Toyoda's death on August 25, 2016, Tanaka has been one of the ten oldest living verified people. She has been one of the five oldest living people since September 15, 2017, the death of Violet Brown . Among the three oldest living, she has been the second oldest living person since Nabi Tajima's death on April 21, 2018, and from July 6, 2018, the anniversary of Giuseppina Projetto's death . She became the oldest living person in the world after Chiyo Miyako's death on July 22, 2018. After Tajima and Miyako, she is the third Japanese woman in a row to bear this title. This had only happened before through successive American women.

On March 9, 2019 , she was officially awarded the title of "oldest living person" by the Guinness Book of Records .
