Life

Projetto was of Sicilian origin (her grandfather came to Sardinia with Giuseppe Garibaldi ) and was born in 1902 in La Maddalena , a small group of islands off the north coast of Sardinia . Her father Cicillo Projetto, born in Sciacca , met her mother while doing military service and later became a cook in a military hospital. She had three older and one younger sister. After the death of her parents, she went to boarding school with her sisters until she moved back to Maddalena in 1923. In 1946 she married Giuseppe Frau , a widower with three children. Together they had a son, Renato, who died trying to save a swimmer at the age of 39. After her son found work in Montelupo Fiorentino in Tuscany , Projetto followed suit a little later. She lived there with her daughter-in-law Giulia Mannozzi and her grandchildren until her death. She was known in her town as "Nonna Pina"; her family attributes their longevity to their optimism and spirit, determination, dignity and zest for life, and habits such as eating chocolate every day. She was also mentally active and never been to the hospital.
