Podturn pri Dolenjskih Toplicah - pronounced [pɔˈtuːɾn pɾi dɔˈleːnskix tɔˈpliːtsax] - (German Unterthurn ) is a district of the Slovenian municipality Dolenjske Toplice (German name: Töplitz in der Unterkrain) in the southeast of the country. The area is part of the historical region of Lower Carniola and is now part of the Jugovzhodna Slovenija region (south-east Slovenia).

Surname

The name is derived from the location of the place below the tower of the Roseck / Roßegg Castle (Roscheck / Rožek).

In the 17th century the place was called Unter den Thurn or Podturnam . The place name was changed in 1953 from Podturn to Podturn pri Dolenjskih Toplicah .

Attractions

Podturn is located below the over 800 m high karst mountain range Kočevski Rog (German Hornwald ) at the karst source the river Radeščica (German name: Radoschitz ). This right branch of the Krka is a popular area for fly fishing .

The local church is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Nicholas and dates from the 17th century. The ruins of Roseck Castle lie in the forest above Podturn.

From Podturn you can take the road 917 towards Željne after about 10 km to the memorial and exhibition site for the Slovenian liberation struggle in World War II, Baza 20 ( partisan camp 20 ), a section of the Lower Carniolan Museum Novo Mesto (Dolenjski muzej Novo mesto).
