Tancítaro is a small town with about 7,500 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Michoacán ; it is the administrative seat of the Municipio Tancítaro with a total of approx. 35,000 inhabitants.
Location and climate
Tancítaro lies at the foot of the 3845 m high Pico de Tancítaro at an altitude of about 2085 m . The closest towns are Pátzcuaro and Morelia (approx. 112 km and 165 km to the northeast, respectively); the port city of Lazaro Cárdenas is about 235 km south on the Pacific coast . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 1010 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the summer half-year.

economy
The area around the village has always been characterized by agriculture because of the sufficient rainfall and fertile soil. In the last decades of the 20th century, Tancítaro has developed into the most important center of avocado cultivation in Mexico (and therefore worldwide), alongside Uruapan , which is about 56 km to the east . The small town itself is characterized by retail trade ( tianguis ) and handicrafts as well as all kinds of services.
history
Tancítaro was an Indian-Spanish settlement that only grew to its present size with the drug and avocado cultivation in the second half of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 21st century, the place became internationally known for its fight against the drug cartels, which was largely organized by the farmers and citizens themselves .
