Taneatua is a village in the Whakatāne District of the Bay of Plenty region on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The village is located about 12 km south-southeast of Whakatāne in the valley of the Whakatane River . The Tauranga River passes the village on its south side and flows into the Whakatane River about 600 m southwest .
population
In the 2013 census, the village had 786 inhabitants, 0.8% less than in the 2006 census.
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The New Zealand State Highway 2 runs directly through the village and connects it to the northwest with Edgecumbe, which is around 18 km away, and to Oseten with Opotiki , which is 25 km away. The village is connected to Whakatane by a direct country road.
Rail transport
In Taneatua ends the Taneatua Branch , a branch line and former part of the East Coast Main Trunk Railway , which branches off at Hawkens Junction northwest of Edgecumbe. The route is currently out of service.
Education
With the Taneatua School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2018, 148 students attended the school.
Attractions
In Taneatua is the Wharenui (meeting house) Te Uru Taumatua of the Ngāi Tūhoe , which includes a library, gallery, archive and a large meeting room.
