Tania Catalina Hermida Palacios (born October 1968 in Cuenca , Ecuador ) is an Ecuadorian director , producer and screenwriter .

biography

Tania Hermida was born in Cuenca as the daughter of a doctor. Due to his frequent change of location, she grew up in Cuenca, Zapotillo on the Ecuadorian-Peruvian border, in London and Quito .

Since she was 19, she attended the International College for Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños , Cuba , from which she graduated in 1991. She also took courses in cinema aesthetics at the University of Valladolid (1990) and creative writing at the Escuela de Letras de Madrid (1998). The budding director lived at times in Honduras and New York.

Since 1996 she has been working as a part-time lecturer at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito ; Since 2003 she has been studying for a Masters degree ( Estudios Culturales ) from the Universidad del Azuay in her hometown of Cuenca.

Her first short film, Ajubel , was made in 1989 while studying in Cuba. The short film El Puente Roto, shot in her hometown of Cuenca, followed in 1991 and Aló in 1999 .

The international breakthrough came in 2000 when Tania Hermida worked on the directing team for the Hollywood film Signs of Life - Proof of Life with Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan, which was shot in Ecuador . In 2002 she also worked as an assistant director for the Colombian production Maria voll der Gnade . In 2003 he worked on the film Crónicas by Sebastián Cordero .

For her first own feature film Qué tan lejos , she was nominated for the International Jury Award at the São Paulo International Film Festival in 2006 and won a “Silver Zenith” in the international competition for first films at the Festival des Films du Monde in Montreal .

In September 2007 she was elected for the Movimiento PAÍS party by President Rafael Correa as one of the 24 nationally elected members of the Constituent Assembly of Ecuador 2007/08 , in which she has participated since November. She is a member of the Committee on Sovereignty, International Relations and Latin American Integration .
