Tanja (ex Waal , ex Wijkse Veer ) is a ferry that operates on the Elbe in Lower Saxony . She travels between New Darchau in Lüchow-Dannenberg and Darchau in Amt Neuhaus , district Lüneburg .

General data

The ferry was built in 1959 at Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek H. J. Koopman in Dordrecht , the Netherlands, and entered service as Waal on March 26, 1960 . From 1960 to 1974 it was operated by the Dutch municipality of Tiel . In 1974 the ship was taken over by the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede . It sailed there as Wijkse Veer until 1993. Since 1993, the ship has been operated by the " Tanja ferry company " of the municipality of Neu Darchau. It replaced a smaller double-ended ferry of the same name, which was a reserve ship in Neu Darchau until 1997.

Technical specifications

Tanja is a free-moving double-ended ferry with ramps at both ends. The wheelhouse is on a bridge in the middle of the roadway. The ferry has a total length of 45.9 meters, a width of 12.1 meters and a draft of 0.7 meters. The usable length for the transport is 30.9 meters, the load capacity 140 tons. It can carry up to 21  cars or 200 people. The highest transportable individual weight is forty tons. The ship reaches a speed of 14 km / h. The drive consists of two Scania diesel engines, each of which drives a Voith-Schneider propeller .

Ferry connection

The Elbe ferry Tanja connects  the district road  19 (K 19) of the Lüchow-Dannenberg district with the district road 61 (K 61) of the Lüneburg district at Elbe kilometer 536.5 . On the left side of the Elbe, the K 19 provides a connection to Landesstraße 232 (L 232), which ensures the traffic connection between Neu Darchau and Bundesstraße 216 (B 216) near Dahlenburg . The right Elbe K 61 meets the Bundesstraße 195 (B 195) in Neuhaus (Elbe ). With the Amt Neuhaus , which runs between Bleckede and Neu Bleckede , the ferry provides the direct transport connections between the Amt Neuhaus on the right bank of the Elbe and the left Elbe district of the Lüneburg district.

The ferry runs all year round and continuously crosses between the two landing stages. A crossing takes about five minutes. On weekdays drives Tanja 5:00 to 21:00 pm on Sundays and holidays periods from 9:00 to 21:00.

In 2007, the ferry crossed the Elbe 60,000 times, according to the company's own operations. An average of 495 cars and a total of 436,000 people were transported every day.

Originally, the ferry was in service in the Netherlands after its commissioning from 1960 to 1993. Until 1974 she drove on the Waal between Tiel and Wamel . From 1974 to 1993 the ship operated on the Lek between Rijswijk and Wijk bij Duurstede.
