Tanja Liedtke

Tanja Liedtke (born October 6, 1977 in Stuttgart ; † August 17, 2007 in Sydney ) was a German dancer and choreographer who worked in Australia .

Career

Liedtke was the daughter of Kurt W. Liedtke and spent her childhood in Spain and Great Britain . She also studied in Madrid and then in Great Britain at the Elmhurst School for Dance and the Ballet Rambert School . In 1997 she moved permanently to Australia . There she danced a. a. at the Australian Dance Theater. As a freelance choreographer, she created works for the Mannheim Academy of Dance and for the De Anima company in Brazil.

In 2004 she developed her first full-length work Twelfth Floor , which was a great success in 2006 on a tour through Australia. For this work she received the 2006 Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography .

In May 2007 she was appointed as the successor to Graeme Murphy as artistic director of the most important Australian dance theater , the Sydney Dance Company , which caused a sensation because of her age and the highly qualified competitors. She should take up her position in October 2007.

Tanja Liedtke died in a traffic accident in Sydney at the age of 29. On the way home at night, she was fatally struck by a garbage truck crossing a street in the immediate vicinity of her apartment - she was so absorbed in her thoughts that she stepped onto the lane directly in front of this car, even though the street was otherwise completely empty.

The Tanja Liedtke Foundation named after her was founded in June 2008 : Its purpose is to promote art and culture with a special focus on dance and theater, primarily in the fields of contemporary dance and modern dance theater .
