Tannoy Ltd. is a traditional British manufacturer of loudspeakers and professional sound reinforcement systems .

History of the company

The company was founded as Tulsemere Manufacturing Company in London in 1926 . The name Tannoy is a word created from the syllables Tan talum and All oy (English for alloy ). Tantalum alloys were used in the manufacture of an electrical rectifier , production of which began in 1926, and so the name still symbolizes a piece of the company's history. The company's founder, Guy R. Fountain, left the Tannoy brand for Guy R. Fountain Ltd. on March 10, 1932 . license.

From 2002 on, Tannoy belonged (together with other well-known manufacturers of audio technology ) to the Danish group of companies TC Group ( TC Electronic , TC-Helicon , Lab.gruppen , Lake , TC Applied Technologies and White Acoustics ).

Today Tannoy belongs to the Music Group.

developments

Tannoy's most important development is the "Dual Concentric" construction principle, which has been and is used in many Tannoy systems. This is a two-way system consisting of a woofer and a tweeter mounted recessed in its center, which emits from the center of the woofer via a special horn channel. The recessed mounting has a time-correcting effect, it compensates for the higher inertia of the woofer. This results in a good point sound source with clear, angle-independent sound radiation, which results in a high level of sound fidelity and speech intelligibility. Tannoy produces home, studio and public address speakers with dual-concentric systems in sizes from 5 to 15 inches.

In 1947 "Dual Concentric" was presented at a trade fair in Great Britain. The advantages quickly made the loudspeaker a sought-after system. Thanks to its particularly good imaging performance, loudspeakers equipped with “dual concentric” systems quickly became the standard in British studios and broadcasters. The use of Tannoy studio monitors in the recording studios established the systems' legendary reputation. In the late 1950s, speaker systems with the "dual concentric" driver were also developed for home users.

Trivia

The name Tannoy became widely known during the Second World War after the manufacturer equipped the ships of the Royal Navy with announcement systems and made it a condition for the brand name to be visible on the loudspeakers. In today's British colloquial language , "Tannoy" is a deonym for "loudspeaker system". The phrase "over the Tannoy" found its way into the Oxford English Dictionary . In the English original of the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy it says:

"Trillian sat hunched over a clump of instruments reading off figures. Her voice was carried round the Tannoy system of the whole ship. "

- Douglas Adams : The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
