Dancing Arabs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dancing Arabs ( Hebrew ערבים רוקדים) is the first novel by the Arab-Israeli writer and journalist Sayed Kashua , published in Hebrew in 2002 . The book was translated into German by Mirjam Pressler .

action

Kashua describes the young protagonist's difficulties between being proud of his Palestinian identity and his longing to be part of Israeli society.

The autobiographical novel tells the story of Eyad , who is the only Arab-Israeli youth to be accepted into an elite Jewish boarding school in Jerusalem. The rejection by his classmates makes it difficult for the boy to adapt to the new environment. When the relationship with his first great love, a Jewish girl, finally falls apart, he leaves boarding school shortly before graduating from high school.

Eyad found work in Jerusalem , finished high school and began studying at university. However, he does not really find joy in life and no longer believes in his future, although he is now married. Even if he tries again and again, he does not manage to find his way between the cultures until the end .

criticism

" Dancing Arabs is an exciting, expressive and frighteningly frank novel that portrays inequality as well as the tragic longing to narrow the gap between the two sorts of Israeli citizens."
