Taoriba Biniati (born November 1, 1995 on Tabiteuea ) is a Kiribati amateur boxer .

Biniati comes from the Tabiteuea atoll in the Kiribati Gilbert Islands south of Tarawa . She started boxing after Derek Andrewartha, a former police officer from Hampshire , England, ran an ad for a female boxer to join his club to compete for Kiribati in the 2014 Commonwealth Games . She was coached by Tarieta Ruata, who represented Kiribati at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The club's only resource was a punching bag hanging from a breadfruit tree .

In December 2013, Biniati joined the Queen's Baton Relay when it passed through Kiribati on its way to Glasgow.

Commonwealth Games 2014

Biniati qualified to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , Scotland from July 23rd to August 3rd, 2014 in the Women's Lightweight Division. She was the first female boxer from her country to take part in the competitions. Before her boxing match at the Commonwealth Games, she had never stood in a boxing ring and had never competed against a woman. She had only trained with male sparring partners in Kiribati and Glasgow. she was financially supported by the Kiribati government and the Commonwealth Games Federation .

In Glasgow she trained with the promoter Alex Morrison , who hired an employee to get her a pair of boxing boots because she didn't have any. The day before the competition weight check, she weighed 1 kg less than the minimum weight for the lightweight division, but she was able to achieve the required body weight using protein drinks. In the competition she was defeated by Isabelle Ratna from Mauritius due to points and a unanimous referee decision after four rounds.
