ITS Vienna Region is the traffic telematics competence center of the three Austrian federal states of Vienna , Lower Austria and Burgenland , which are collectively referred to as Austria's Eastern Region and Vienna Region. ITS is the abbreviation for Intelligent Transport Systems, the English term for traffic telematics.

history

ITS Vienna Region was founded in 2006 as a project embedded in the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) GmbH by the three Austrian federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland and officially started operations on October 12, 2006. In Vienna, ITS Vienna Region left the Project Verkehrsmanagement Wien (VEMA), which was defined as a focus of action in the Masterplan Verkehr Wien 2003 .

aims

The general goal of ITS Vienna Region is to use traffic telematics to make traffic more environmentally friendly, safer, more efficient and more flexible. The existing traffic network should be used optimally and all road users should find their individual best route using high-quality traffic information. The objective comparison of different routes, modes of transport and combinations should also point out new possibilities that may not have been considered before. The basis is the transport policy objectives of the three federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland.

tasks

ITS Vienna Region collects current traffic data is calculated in real-time a traffic situation for the individual motorized , assist and advise the public administration services in the implementation of traffic management and e-government and is involved in numerous research projects. ITS Vienna Region is also a founding partner of the Austria-wide ITS projects traffic information Austria VAO and the graph integration platform GIP as well as the Austria-wide GIS project basemap. ITS Vienna Region operates the intermodal routing and traffic information service VOR AnachB as a free service for all road users .

In order to include the entire traffic system and the largest possible number of data sources, ITS Vienna Region works with numerous data partners with whom long-term data contracts exist. These include, among others, ASFINAG , ÖBB , Wiener Linien , the police , the Ö3 -erkehrsredaktion, Carsharing.at, the taxi companies Taxi31300, Taxi40100 and Taxi60160, Citybike Wien and all public administration offices in the Vienna Region.

Project structure

Analogous to the shareholder structure of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region, the founding partners Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland are involved in the ratio 44-44-12. ITS Vienna Region is financed through contributions from the three federal states involved as well as through direct commissioning and research funding .

ITS Vienna Region is formally subordinate to the management of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region, but has its own project control and project management structures. The ITS Vienna Region's strategic project management is carried out by a steering committee that meets three times a year. In addition, the technical control of ongoing project activities is carried out by a working committee that meets approximately every two weeks. At the head of project management is the project manager, who is supported by team leaders for the departments of research and development, organization, technology and passenger information. The entire project team consists of around 15 people.

BEFORE AnachB

VOR AnachB is an intermodal online routing and traffic information service operated by ITS Vienna Region together with the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region VOR and made available to all end users free of charge. The VOR AnachB routing is also available to external partners via an interface.

history

The AnachB website was launched in 2009, followed by the AnachB smartphone apps for iOS and Android in 2011 . For the time being, both apps only worked for the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. In 2014, AnachB underwent an extensive relaunch with a new design and additional functions. The smartphone app and subsequently also the web service were renamed to VOR AnachB , since they have been operated jointly by ITS Vienna Region and the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region since the relaunch. In addition to a revised design, the main technical innovation in 2014 is the change to the traffic information Austria VAO as a routing base, which is why VOR AnachB has been functioning throughout Austria since then. The AnachB routing is also used by partners for their services via an interface.

properties

  • The intermodal route planner works equally well for public transport , cycling , walking , driving, park & ride , bike & ride , bike transport and car train and can also combine these.
  • With each route query, AnachB shows several options for different modes of transport and thus enables an objective comparison of travel times and CO 2 emissions.
  • The traffic situation for the road network in the Vienna Region is recalculated every 7.5 minutes. It is included in the route calculations and can also be displayed directly on the map.
  • AnachB uses the graph integration platform GIP as a digital transport network. The GIP is much more up-to-date and detailed than conventional commercial traffic graphs and therefore offers an optimal routing basis.
  • The webcams show live images of road sections throughout the Vienna Region and the ASFINAG road network directly on the map.
  • AnachB also shows all construction sites, diversions and traffic reports as well as numerous points of interest . B. bicycle parking facilities , car sharing spaces or stations from Nextbike and Citybike Wien .

Project participation

Traffic information Austria VAO

For high-quality routing across all modes of transport, ITS Vienna Region has been relying on the new Austrian traffic information system since 2014. AnachB thus also works across Austria beyond the Vienna Region. The VAO project development consortium consists of Austrian federal states and cities (Vienna, Graz ), ASFINAG, ARGE ÖVV, ÖAMTC , ITS Vienna Region and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology BMVIT . VAO was made possible by grants from the climate and energy fund. The result is joint traffic information for all of Austria, which covers all modes of transport and covers all traffic.

Graph integration platform GIP

Every routing needs a digital traffic network (= graph) as a basis. ITS Vienna Region uses the intermodal graph integration platform GIP for AnachB and is also its operator. The GIP is the reference graph for all departments of the Austrian public administration and is so detailed and up-to-date that it is also used by them for legally binding administrative processes and e-government. The GIP is constantly updated by the Austrian public administration.

basemap.at

basemap.at is an up-to-date and comprehensive map for the whole of Austria and is based on the geodata of the Austrian administrations (including the graph integration platform GIP). basemap.at is the result of a cooperation project between the nine Austrian federal states ( Geoland.at ), ITS Vienna Region in its capacity as GIP.at operator, as well as the Technical University of Vienna and the company Synergis. The administrative basemap is provided under the open license Creative Commons (CC-BY 3.0 AT) for all private and commercial use and is constantly updated. Like many other projects, AnachB uses the basemap as a background map.

Research projects

In order to continuously improve its own know-how, its role as a national network node and the AnachB traffic service in the dynamic environment of traffic telematics, ITS Vienna Region is involved in research projects as a partner or through letters of intent . Some of these projects are briefly listed below:

  • PEACOX: Development of an eco-sensitive intermodal routing and navigation system
  • EDITS: Development of a transnational database for ITS services
  • MyITS: Development of a customizable routing service with semantic input
  • BIS: Development of a barrier information system especially for wheelchair users to support barrier-free mobility
