Tapa

Tapa (German Taps ) is a city in northern Estonia 80 km southeast of Tallinn and the administrative seat of the municipality of Tapa , in which it is located.

history

Tapa is Estonia's main railway hub. Tallinn is 77 km away by rail, Tartu 112 km and Narva 133 km away.

The origin of tapa can be traced back to the Tallinn - Saint Petersburg railway line , which opened on October 24, 1870 with a great festival of the Baltic Railway. Construction of the Tapa (Taps) - Dorpat line began in 1875, and on August 21, 1876, the first train from Reval (Estonian: Tallinn) ran via Taps to Dorpat (Estonian: Tartu). Today the routes are operated by Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railway).

Tapa grew rapidly as a railroad workers' settlement. Because the station was built on the land of the landowner Taps, it got its name.

Population development

The first census in 1922 counted 2,398 inhabitants. At the last census in 1986 it was 10,395. After the Soviet military withdrew in 1993, the population fell sharply again and has now leveled off at just over 5,000.
