Taphropeltus contractus is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .
features
The bugs are 3.2 to 3.7 millimeters long. The species of the genus Taphropeltus can be recognized by their head constricted behind the compound eyes . The very similar species Taphropeltus hamulatus differs from Taphropeltus contractus in its darker color and relatively larger antennae . In addition, the species is a bit smaller.
distribution and habitat
The species is widespread in Europe, excluding the far north, and occurs in the south to North Africa and east to the Caucasus . The species is widespread in Central Europe and is not uncommon in the south. However, it occurs only locally north of the low mountain range threshold. In the Alps, the species is only found in warmer valleys. As a ground dweller, the species colonizes open to partially shaded, dry and warm habitats.
Way of life
The animals only climb on the plants during the mating season in early summer and otherwise only stay in the litter and under plant rosettes, mosses or stones. They suckle the seeds of herbaceous plants and trees.
