Taranath Rao

Pandit Taranath Rao ( Taranath Ramarao Hattiangady , born March 6, 1915 in Mangalore , Karnataka , † 1991 ) was an Indian percussionist.

Taranath learned tabla as a child from Vishnuji Goakar and Mridangam from his father Ramarao Hattiangady and studied Tala with Laya Brahma Bhaskar Khapruji . In Mangalore he met Shamshuddin Khan , who worked as a companion to Abdul Kareem Khan , and who invited him to become his student.

In 1932 Taranath went to Bombay , where he attended the Sir JJ School of Art and was a student of the Pakhawaj and tabla player Subbarao Ankolekar until his death in 1937. In 1939 Shamshuddin Khan officially accepted him as a student. At the admissions ceremony, Taranath played a four hour tabla solo. He also studied Pakhawaj with Baburao Gokhale , the student of a grandchild of Nana Saheb Panse , who had established a Pakhawaj style named after him.

In the following years Taranath worked with numerous well-known Indian musicians such as Abdul Kareem Khan , Allauddin Khan , Nissar Hussain Khan , Ravi Shankar , Ali Akbar Khan , Vilayat Hussein Khan , Pannalal Ghosh , Fayyaz Khan , Sawai Ghandarva , Kumar Ghandarva , Rais Khan , Bhimsen Joshi , Amir Khan , Krisnarao Pandit , Azmat Khan , Malikarjan Mansur , Salamat and Nazakat Hussein Khan and Amanat Ali Fatali from Pakistan , Rahimuddin Dagar and Ziamohiuddin Dagar together. He also gave concerts and lessons at All India Radio .

For the last twelve years of his life, Taranath taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles . His numerous students included u. a. Ravi Bellare , Shashi Bellare , Sadanand Naimpalli , Omkar Gulvady , Mohan Balvally , Vijay Kangutkar , Balakrishna Iyer , Jayawant Bantwal , Jef Feldman , Peter Fagiola , Gregg Johnson , Bengt Berger and Leonice Shinneman .

Taranath, who was a devout Muslim, died on his return from his Hajj , which he had undertaken in old age.
