Tardis Bridge
The Tardis Bridge is a road bridge in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . It crosses the Alpine Rhine between the villages of Landquart and Mastrils .
history
For the routes from Graubünden to the north - to Lake Constance or towards Zurich - the overgrown rivers Rhine and Landquart , which were not corrected until the 19th century, represented a first-rate traffic obstacle. In 1529 the lower toll bridge over the Rhine was built at the mouth of the Landquart , at that time the the only bridge on the Rhine between Reichenau and Lake Constance, which replaced the episcopal Rhine crossing (ferry or auxiliary bridge) at Maienfeld .
The only year-round connection between the Three Leagues and the Swiss Confederation led via the structure, named Tardisbrücke after its builder Metardus "Tardi" Heinzenberger from Bad Ragaz . The strategic importance during the Graubünden turmoil and the Napoleonic campaigns was correspondingly great . The old bridge was replaced by an iron structure in 1892, which in turn was replaced by an arched bridge in winter 2004.
