Tarik Mete

Tarik Mete (born August 15, 1986 in Hallein ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). He is currently the City Council of Salzburg. From February 3 to December 13, 2016 he was a member of the Salzburg state parliament . He was regional chairman of JUSOS (SPÖ youth) Salzburg.

education and profession

The Salzburg native with Turkish roots attended the Heinrich-Salfenauer-Volksschule in Salzburg-Schallmoos and the Christian-Doppler-Gymnasium, where he graduated with honors in 2004. He completed a degree in law (2010 Mag. Iur.) And judicial practice. He then began a doctorate in law at the University of Salzburg and received his doctorate in 2017 (Dr. iur.). He also earned degrees in Political Science (2013 BA) and European Union Studies (2013 MA) and did other training. In addition, Mete completed a master's degree in Business Administration (2017 MBA) in cooperation with Georgetown University in Washington and another Master in Management (2018 MIM) at the Salzburg Management and Business School (SMBS). During his studies, Mete also completed numerous stays abroad, such as in Olomuc (Czech Republic), Marburg (Germany) and Istanbul (Turkey). Mete gained professional experience as a specialist in a personnel company (2004 to 2006), in the IT area, in the office of Governor Gabriele Burgstaller and at the SPÖ state parliament club (2010 to 2011). Among other things, he financed his studies as a taxi driver in Salzburg. After completing his law degree, he completed the court year at the Hallein District Court and at the Salzburg Regional Court. From 2012 to 2013 he worked as a parliamentary assistant in the SPÖ parliamentary club in Vienna. In September 2013, Mete took up a position at the Salzburg Regional Health Insurance Fund (SGKK) as a director's lawyer and health coordinator. In the meantime he is the deputy head of the SGKK department, responsible for contract law.

Politics & social engagement

Mete joined the young socialists during his high school years, was deputy chairman for Salzburg City from 2006 to 2008, member of the state board (and integration spokesman) from 2008 to 2010, and state chairman and member of the federal board from 2010 to 2013. As a student he was involved in the editorial team of “Die VAUST” at the Salzburg VSStÖ. In the SPÖ he has been a member of the state party board since 2010, a member of the district committee for Salzburg City and a board member of the young generation (2012 deputy federal chairman), and since 2013 a member of the SPÖ state party presidency. Mete is also involved with the Salzburger Kinderfreunde, the BSA and the SWV. In the state elections in 2013, the SPÖ presented him as their youth candidate. He was able to convince young migrants in particular and took the lead in the preferential votes with a number of 1832, but according to an internal party agreement, he was only supposed to move into the state parliament at half time.

On February 3, 2016 Mete was the first from a so-called guest worker family originating member of the Salzburg regional parliament sworn in . During her parental leave he took over her role as a member of the state parliament from Nicole Solarz . In the state parliament, Mete acted for the SPÖ state parliamentary group as area spokesman for youth, integration, asylum, sport and transparency. Mete has been a local councilor in the city of Salzburg since May 2019, spokesman for his parliamentary group for traffic, control and diversity. In addition, the young lawyer founded the Global Shapers Community Hub in Salzburg (part of the World Economic Forum) and was selected for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship by the GMF Foundation (German Marshall Fund of the United States) in Washington. Mete is also the founder and chairman of the non-profit organization "Diversity in Action (ViA)".

He was international advisor to the ÖH student union at the University of Salzburg from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2013 Tarik Mete was regional chairman of JUSOS Salzburg. Since 2010 he has been a member of the district committee of the SPÖ Salzburg-Stadt and the regional party executive. He has been in the regional party presidium of the SPÖ Salzburg since 2013. He was a member of the federal board of the Socialist Youth from 2010 to 2014. Since 2012 he has been a member of the regional board of the BSA Salzburg, since 2014 of the regional board of Kinderfreunde Salzburg and since 2015 of the regional board of the Salzburg Business Association. He has been state chairman of the Young BSA since 2012. From 2012 to 2014 he was deputy national chairman of the young generation in the SPÖ. He has been a member of the State Youth Advisory Council since 2014. He was a member of the Salzburg State Parliament from February 3 to December 13, 2016. He ran for the 2019 National Council elections in the hopeless list position 134 and without making a preferential vote campaign and achieved 15,000 preferential votes, with which he nationwide in seventh place and in second place within the SPÖ of the candidates (behind Pamela Rendi-Wagner ) with the most preferential votes.
