action

Ballou is a car mechanic at the Ellroth haulage company, where he also has a room. In his free time he is involved in an acting group in the theater, where Denise Ellroth, his boss's wife, also plays. He is proud of the recognition he receives in the evening in the theater and hopes to play the leading role together with Denise. Ballou is in love with Denise and he suffers from Kurt Ellroth beating his wife. So he wants to confront him about Denise's black eye and meets him in the bathroom, where he has just let water in the tub. Kurt Ellroth only provokes Ballou and makes fun of him. In his anger, Ballou drowns his boss in the bathtub and makes it look like an accident by throwing a small television in the bathwater and plugging the plug into the socket.

When the hearse arrives, Ballou takes care of the two children, while Denise is in shock. The death certificate is issued with the note "No third party culpability recognizable". However, Chief Inspector Hanne Wiegand has received an anonymous tip and is starting the investigation. She learns that the shipping company is broke. Ballou, for his part, does not believe in the freight forwarder's economic collapse. At night he sifts through documents from the vault to get clarity. To his astonishment he finds that the brothers made a lot of money through insurance fraud. Richard Ellroth catches him doing it and when Ballou threatens to have everything "blown up" if he cannot stay with the company, Ellroth claims to the police that Denise and Ballou are accomplices. They wanted to get Kurt out of the way. Ms. Wiegand suspects a lone perpetrator: Ballou. She sees his motive in his love for Denise.

Theater director Kaiser learns of the suspicions against Ballou and throws him out of his troupe. Ballou is now struggling with himself and wants to surrender, but then he goes back to his dream world with Denise and confesses to her that he wants to marry her. This is suddenly interrupted when the Dane Andersson, to whom Kurt Ellroth owes 800,000 DM, breaks into the company premises with his henchmen, shoots the guard dog and demands his share of the insurance fraud. Since Kurt has embezzled the money, Richard and Ballou have no choice but to do the illegal business again. They break into a warehouse in Baden-Baden to steal their own goods and then report them to the insurance company as stolen. Denise wants to protect Ballou and informs the police about the theft. Richard is shot and Ballou escapes to Denise. Again, Wiegand cannot prove anything to Ballou, but she makes it unmistakably clear to him that she considers him to be the perpetrator and that sooner or later he will be convicted.

In the meantime, Denise has made contact with Andersson and is determined to pursue her own plan. There is not much left of a grieving and helpless widow. She sells the haulage company to the "Dane" and Ballou sees her very familiar with him. He realizes that Denise was obviously just using him and that his act was completely pointless. After Ballou found the money hidden in the basement, Denise confesses to him that she has taken it to go back to the south of France.

Wiegand is determined to convict Ballou and so she succeeds with a trick to get him to confess. Ballou is arrested and Denise stays behind with Andersson at the forwarder's yard.
