Maria im Elend is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The report produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk was first broadcast on December 16, 1979 on ARD's first program. It is the 107th episode in the crime scene series; the 13th with Chief Inspector Veigl.

After the valuable Gothic Madonna statue " Maria im Elend " was stolen, blackmailers demand 200,000 marks from a tabloid for the return. The reporters smelled a big headline and paid the ransom without calling the police or registering the bills. When they are handed over, they try to identify the perpetrator. A short time later, the photographer Lansky, who was involved in the story, disappeared and is found dead in his burned-out car a little later.

Commissioner Veigl is investigating this complicated case. Lansky was the client for the robbery of the Madonna. In advance, as part of a report on art theft , he had the security measures to protect the statue shown. His accomplices, the painter Mack and the geriatric nurse Niebler, get nervous. With Lansky's death, the ransom also disappeared without a trace. Niebler in particular needs 20,000 D-Marks to be able to service the next installment for his friend Sachs' own hairdressing salon. Mack and Niebler therefore undertake another art heist, the proceeds of which will be used to service the installment.

The investigations around Lansky all lead to Mack. However, he has a plausible alibi for Lansky's time of death . Mack can also explain his relationship with Lansky through a painting contract. Commissioner Veigl therefore not suspect him further, especially since he Mack ever innocent in custody had taken.

In the course of the investigation, however, there are indications that Mack must be Lansky's murderer. In order to be able to convict Mack, Veigl pretends that there are bills from the robbery of the Madonna registered in the installment paid in cash and confronts Niebler's girlfriend Sachs. He also has Mack, Niebler and Sachs shadowed.

Mack, who is Lansky's murderer and appropriated the full ransom, was able to sell the second art theft for far less than 20,000 marks. To keep Niebler calm, he had added ransom money from the robbery of the Madonna. Confronted with the question of how the money from the robbery of the Madonna could be between the money from the installment payments, Mack confesses to Lansky's murder and prepares for his escape. Veigl anticipates the escape and Mack turns himself in to the police after a shootout with hostage-taking and through Niebler's mediation. Niebler is also arrested.
