Tauno Marttinen (born September 27, 1912 in Helsinki , † July 18, 2008 in Janakkala ) was a Finnish composer .

He studied in Viipuri and Helsinki , a. a. with Ilmari Hannikainen and Selim Palmgren . From 1950 to 1975 he was director of the Hämeenlinna Music Institute . His first compositions still fall into the late Romantic period , while his later works, which he composed after the Second World War, contain clearer formal features of modern classical music. His most important works, especially operas such as Medio from 1976 , also fall during this period . His stage works (including 15 operas) are based u. a. on texts by Nikolai Gogol , Oscar Wilde and Hans Christian Andersen .

Ten symphonies were composed between 1958 and 1998 . In addition to working on large opera projects, Marttinen also composed concerts and many solo works.

reception

Marttinen has been referred to as the “Shaman of Hämeenlinna” by the music world. He was considered one of the most productive Finnish composers. Especially his serious stage works are often emphasized.
