Tautoga onitis is a species of fish from the wrasse family(Labridae) that occurs in the western Atlantic , especially on the east coast of the United States and Canada . It feeds mainly on mussels , snails and crustaceans .
General
The species reaches a maximum length of up to 90 centimeters; the heaviest known specimen weighed 11.3 kilograms. The oldest known specimens were 34 years old.
The fish prefer to stay on the shore of hard bottom, occasionally in brackish water . They also prefer water temperatures above 10 ° C. Adult males behave territorially, looking for food during the day and resting in crevices at night.
The mating takes place between females and dominant males with a lengthy courtship. Spawning occurs in groups or in pairs and has been observed in coastal Virginia waters in April through June and in Canadian waters in June through July.
Fisheries and endangerment
Tautoga onitis is of greater importance to the fishery on the North American Atlantic coast. For example, 750 tons of the species are fished annually on the New England coast .
Because of its low rate of reproduction and slow growth, tautogogonitis is particularly susceptible to overfishing . Since the populations have declined sharply, the Blue Ocean Institute in Stony Brook recommends avoiding the consumption of this species.
The IUCN has assessed the state of the species as endangered .
