Map of Sjuøyane and Waldenøya |
The Sjuøyane ("seven islands") form a group of islands north of Northeast Land , in the Svalbard Archipelago.
geography
The archipelago has a total area of 65 km². It is separated from the northeastern country and its offshore islands by the 13 km wide Nordkappsundet . The northernmost island in the group, Rossøya , is Norway's northernmost landmass . The second northernmost island in the group, 80 meters southeast of Rossøya, is Vesle Tavleøya ("small table island"). The main island and largest island in the Sjuøyane is Phippsøya . It is named after Constantine John Phipps , who passed Spitzbergen on an expedition to the North Pole in 1773 , but later had to decide to turn back. Also on board was the future British admiral Horatio Nelson , namesake of Nelsonøya . Another island in the group, Parryøya , is named after William Edward Parry . The other two islands in Sjuøyane are called Martensøya , named after Friderich Martens , the author of a travelogue to Spitsbergen from the 17th century, and Tavleøya , immediately northwest of the main island Phippsøya.
The Sjuøyane are part of the Northeast Svalbard Nature Reserve .
The island of Waldenøya in the southwest is no longer included in the archipelago.
