The Tawarau River is about 25 km long river in the Waikato region on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The headwaters of the Tawarau River are located around 13 km west-northwest of Te Kuiti and around 9.5 km west-southwest of the Waitomo Caves , in a wooded area and on the slopes of a small 414  m high mountain. From there, the river meanders westward through the mountain landscape, and after three sharp bends and the simultaneous passing of the Double Falls, it turns to the north-northwest and after a total of around 25 kilometers it flows into the Morocopa River at the small settlement Te Anga . The western continuation of the New Zealand State Highway 37 , which leads from Waitomo as a country road further west to the coast, passes the estuary of the river on its north side.

Sightseeing

In the upper third of the river are the Tawarau Falls , which can be visited on the three-hour Tawarau Falls Loop Track .
