Taylor Branch (born January 14, 1947 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American author and historian.

Life

Taylor Branch is the son of Franklin T. and Jane Branch, b. Worthington. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in history, and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University . There he finished his studies in 1970 with a Master of Public Affairs.

From 1970 Branch worked as a journalist for The Washington Monthly , Harper’s and Esquire . He has also published non-fiction books on historical and political subjects. Since 1976 he has lived mainly from his work as an independent author. His best-known work is the America in the King Years trilogy , in which he describes the history of the American civil rights movement with a focus on Martin Luther King . It has won several awards, including the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for History for the first volume .

Branch taught history of the civil rights movement at Goucher College in Maryland (1998 to 2000) and lectured at other universities. He was also active as a consultant and speechwriter and worked for Bill Clinton from 1992 .

Branch is married to Christina Macy and has two children. He lives in Baltimore .
