history

On September 28, 1836, Almeida Garrett (1799–1854) was commissioned by the newly appointed Minister Manuel Passos to plan a national theater on Rossio Square, on the site of the ruins of the Palácio dos Estaus (formerly the Treasury and seat of the Inquisition in Portugal). However, the country continued to be in turmoil after the Miguelista War and the September Revolution, and construction was delayed. According to plans by the Italian architect Fortunato Lodi , the theater was built in the classicist style from 1842 to 1846 and opened on April 13, 1846 as part of the celebrations for the 27th birthday of Queen Maria II . The theater remained in state ownership after the Portuguese Republic was proclaimed in 1910 and was renamed the Teatro Nacional de Almeida Garrett . The artistic direction was given to a theater company that was selected through tenders. The company of Amélia Rey Colaço and Robles Monteiro ran the theater for the longest time, from 1929 to 1964. Then a fire completely destroyed the building, except for its outer walls. It was rebuilt true to the original and only reopened in 1978, after the Carnation Revolution and the end of the Estado Novo regime and its colonial wars .

The building has been a listed building since 1928.

Located directly on Rossio Square, the building houses a main hall, the Sala Garrett with 436 seats (originally 699), and the studio, the Sala Estúdio Amélia Rey Colaço / Robles Monteiro with 91 seats (originally 80).

Maria João Monteiro Brilhante has directed the state-owned theater since 2008. The director João Mota has been the artistic director since 2011, as the successor to the actor Diogo Infante , who did not agree to the deep cuts in government grants and was relieved of his office in November 2011.

Classics are usually performed in the main hall, while new pieces are shown in the studio. In April / May 2012 Georg Büchner's A Morte de Danton ( Danton's death ) and O Comboio da Madrugada by Tennessee Williams were played in the Sala Garrett , while Onde Estavas Quando Criei O Mundo? ( Artur Ribeiro ) and Diagnóstico: Hamlet by Miquel Gallardo .
