Telenav is a US technology company active in the field of mobile navigation. The company, headquartered in Santa Clara , Silicon Valley, has offices in Detroit , Los Angeles , New York City , São Paulo , Shanghai , Xi'an , Tokyo , Berlin and Cluj-Napoca . Well-known customers of the company are Ford , GM , Toyota and AT&T .
history
Telenav was founded in 1999, initially under the name “Televigation”, by YC Chao, Sal Dhanani, HP Jin and Bob Rennard. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11) created a significant financial cliff for the company. In 2006 the profit threshold was exceeded.
In 2009 the company started the OpenStreetCam project , then under the name OpenStreetView .
In 2010 Telenav went public on NASDAQ . In October 2012, it was announced that Telenav had acquired ThinkNear, a location-based advertising company , for $ 22.5 million.
In 2013, Steve Coast , the founder of OpenStreetMap , was hired. In 2014, he was responsible for the takeover of Skobbler from Berlin. Coast stayed with the company until 2016. Martijn van Exel, the developer of MapRoulette.org, also works at Telenav.
In December 2016 Telenav made GPS data from INRIX freely available to improve OpenStreetMap.
