Teleocichla (from Teleogramma [because of the similarity] + Cichla [another genus of cichlids]) is a genus of cichlids that occurs in the Amazon basin east of the Rio Tapajó in the immediate vicinity of rapids and in slower flowing rivers and streams over sandy bottoms.

features

Teleocichla species are small cichlids that grow to be 7 to 11 centimeters long. The body is very elongated and hardly flattened at the sides, the head small, with a small, terminal or lower mouth. The dorsal fin is very long and low, the pelvic fins strong, so that the fish can use them to support themselves on the bottom of the water. The color of the fish is light gray, beige to greenish. A longitudinal ligament can be more or less distinct. Teleocichla species live on the ground and have a reduced swim bladder . In adult males the fins are elongated, and mature females have a reddish belly.

Reproduction

Teleocichla species are substrate spawners that spawn in caves. After the act of spawning, the female often drives away the male first and takes care of both the clutch and the defense of the territory . Later, the male can take part in the latter.

species

There are currently nine species in the genus.

Systematics

The genus Teleocichla was described in 1988 by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander along with six new species of cichlids. Phylogenetically , it is part of the species-rich genus Crenicichla, which is in need of revision .
