White Pagoda Temple in Beijing
The Temple of the White Pagoda ( Chinese 白塔寺 , Pinyin Báitǎ Sì ) or Miaoying Temple ( 妙 应 寺 , Miàoyīng Sì ) in Beijing dates back to the Liao dynasty .
Under the Liao dynasty of the Chitan , five stupas ( pagodas ) were built in Beijing (Yanjing ) in the four directions and in the center of the city. All five were later destroyed, but in 1271 the Mongolian Emperor Kublai Khan of the Yuan Dynasty had the Nepalese artist Araniko build a new stupa on the terrace where one of the stupas had stood. This was completed in 1279. The temple surrounding the stupa was destroyed in 1368 and rebuilt in 1457 under the Ming Dynasty .
The site has been on the List of Monuments of the People's Republic of China in Beijing (1-74) since 1961 .
