Tendencia is a Cuban metal band that was formed in 1994. She combines traditional metal music with Afro-Cuban and Latin American elements.

history

Tendencia was founded in the spring of 1994 in Pinar del Río in western Cuba. Because of the poor supply situation in Cuba, the band had to rely on used instruments and improvised equipment for a long time. A first single was released in 1996 via the German Impact Records sub -label System Shock. The first album was released there in 2001. For the album Rebeldes , released in 2004 on the Cuban state label EGREM , the band won the Cubadisco Award in the “Best Metal Album” category at the Cuban “Cubadisco” festival and the “Premio D'Arte” art award in their hometown. Also in 2005, Tendencia toured Venezuela . 2007 and 2008 tours followed through Spain, in 2009 a tour through Germany. Since 2009, the band has been working with the German organization Cuba Sí as part of a project for the musical education of children and adolescents initiated by Tendencia , which was at times observed by the German Office for the Protection of the Constitution. For the 20th anniversary of the band, she toured Cuba with the German hardcore band COR . The tour was partly financed by a crowdfunding campaign, organizationally supported by the Cuban Ministry of Culture and accompanied by an online tour diary by the German metal magazine Rock Hard . The tour was part of the evening news on Cuban state television. A tour of the USA followed in 2015. In 2016 the band performed at festivals in Colombia and Mexico. Through the tour with COR, contacts had been established with COR's own label Rügencore Records, through which the album Cargando Cruces was released in 2018 . In the same year, a tour of Germany was again partly financed by a crowdfunding campaign, with financial support from the Cuban Ministry of Culture. As part of this tour, the band played at the With Full Force Festival.

Bassist Carballo and the former drummer Guillermo are full-time teaching professions - Carballo is Professor of Economics at the University of Havana , Guillermo Professor of Music. Guitarist Mederos Valdés was president of the Cuban artists 'association Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS), guitarist Puentes is director of the house for young artists in Pinar del Río and deputy chairman of the local artists' association.

Style and reception

Tendencia is often compared to Sepultura , according to the German rock-hard magazine. Tendencia adds Afro-Caribbean and Latin American elements to her music, mainly in the area of percussion in the form of batas , congas and timbales .

The Cuban music magazine Palamúsica Underground sees in the early work of Tendencia primarily elements of heavy metal and grunge , which over time have given way to elements of thrash metal and death metal . Metal.de describes the band's music in a review of the debut album Re-Evolución as "a mid-tempo, Death / Thrash-dominated mix with occasional hardcore sprinkles" and criticized average song material and a powerless production. The Sachsen-Sonntag , a free newspaper from the Leipzig region, assigns the band to hardcore and describes their music as “loud and rough, sometimes nasty” and dominated by the singer's “screaming, roaring voice that goes to all limits”.

The band itself describes their music as "Ethno Metal". The lyrics of the songs deal with social problems and developments in their homeland, with no fundamentally negative attitude towards the government. The first lyrics were in English, but the band switched to Spanish before the first sound carrier was released.
