Tenne (in northern Germany also Lohdiele , Loodiele (after T. Storm ), in Switzerland called the Tenn ) describes the paved floor of a barn , on which in earlier times the grain was threshed with flails after the harvest . Here the chaff was separated from the grain by means of wind sifters .

The threshing floor is often made of tamped clay , but also of concrete or wood .

Expressions

In the malting industry , the flat ground on which the green malt was spread out in so-called heaps was called the threshing floor. On the threshing floor, the green malt had to be turned daily with malt shovels and rakes. This labor-intensive way of working is now usually done fully automatically in the germination box .

On farms , the threshing floor is often the part of the building connecting the farm and living quarters, where the grain was threshed in winter.

history

The first threshing races were in the open air. They usually consisted of pounded clay or were paved with stones. Often they were covered with towels to catch the grains. They could be round or rectangular. There were various techniques such as threshing with threshing sticks, threshing sleds or by riding cattle or other cattle. The wind was used to separate the chaff from the grain or fronds were used. Threshing tennis like this existed in southern Europe until the 20th century. In Northern and Central Europe, due to the inconsistent weather, the threshing floors were mostly moved to the barn.
